August 26, 2024 - Six Comal ISD musicians were named Outstanding Performer last May. Four received the title at the Texas State Solo Ensemble Contest (TSSEC) while two received the title at the 2024 UIL State Wind Ensemble Festival. These students were recognized for their achievements by the Comal ISD Board of Trustees on August 22 during its monthly meeting.
Only 286 students in the state of Texas received this honor at the TSSEC this past year. These Comal ISD students represent the top 2 to 3 percent of solo performances and earned a UIL state gold medal. The TSSEC Outstanding Performers in Comal ISD include the following students:
- Nick Arnold, Canyon High School, keyboard percussion solo
- Ella Van Dusen, Davenport High School, vocal solo
- Caroline Sherwood, Davenport High School, snare drum solo
- Aura Rubio, Smithson Valley High School, alto saxophone solo
In place of ratings and outstanding band awards at the 2024 UIL State Wind Ensemble Festival, the evaluator panel may honor individual performers and/or sections for exemplary musical achievement with the Outstanding Performer award. State gold medals are awarded to these individuals. Comal ISD 2024 honorees include the following musicians:
- Caden Scales, Canyon High School, saxophone
- Ian Leath, Canyon High School, saxophone
Band directors include Steve Vaden and Brad Arnold from CHS, Jeffrey Keys and Gid de la Rosa from DHS and Michael Childress from SVHS.
Congratulations!
